Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience faster, more nimble application performance and improved energy efficiency with this 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo processor from Intel's 45nm Penryn lineup. The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--helps to reduce power consumption while delivering. powerful processing speeds. This 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo processor is aided by a 1066 front-side bus speed and a super-sized 6 MB L2 cache--both top-of-the-line for Intel's Penryn processors. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts.
Hard Drive and Memory
The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC6400 DDR2 RAM (two 1 GB SO-DIMMs) has an industry-leading 800 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 4 GB.
Graphics and Video
The 24-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix LCD offers a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels. It has a brightness rating of 385 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), a contrast ratio of 750:1, and a viewing angle of 178 degrees (both horizontal and vertical). An ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor powers the iMac with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory. It features some of the most advanced graphics technology available and delivers new levels of visual realism and a huge texture fill rate for smooth surfaces and complex character details. GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3) is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications.
This iMac also enables you to connect a second display in either extended desktop mode or video mirroring mode. The mini-DVI port connects to DVI displays, VGA monitors and projectors, and S-video and composite devices using the appropriate adapter (sold separately).
Wired and Wireless Connectivity
![]() You get a full complement of ports on the back of the iMac, including three USB 2.0 and two flavors of Firewire--400 and 800. |
Share files around your house with built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet as well as the next-generation high-speed wireless 802.11n technology, which is integrated into the latest Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The iMac is also Wi-Fi Certified to work with base stations and routers that use industry-standard 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g wireless technologies.

Not perfect, but much better than the competition (2009-06-19)
After many years of owning Dells and HP's I bought a 24 inch iMac in Oct 2007. A pleasant contrast from my experience with PC's. HP is fair, but Dell has a big quality problem not only with it's hardware, but with it's telephone help system. I wish I had the days (yes) back that I spent being shuttled by telephone around the Indian subcontinent.
Everything's much easier to use with the iMac. The operating system, itself, seems to prevent viruses and keep them from contaminating my harddrive. Goodbye to annoying messages from Norton and McAfee!
Almost no "craplets" either. My machine came with MS Office installed on a trial basis. I got rid of Office and replaced it with Apple's iWork. I miss some features of Office, but iWork is easier to use. It exports to various Office formats for those who haven't seen the light and still run Microsoft applications.
I work a computer to death with large applications and a lot of peripherals. I'd give this computer five stars, but I had some major hardware problems. Both the optical drive and the processor went on the fritz and had to be replaced at different times. I had my files backed up on Apple's Time Machine, but it was still a bit of a pain.
Fortunately I had bought the Apple Care package and there was no cost to me other than running around carrying the (very light) machine to the local repair shop and back home.
So, you may ask, with some major hardware failing, why am I giving this machine four stars? The reason is that Apple has chosen to hire the best technicians anywhere to occupy their help desks. Apple apparently doesn't regard the help desk as a cost center, but rather as sales support. I bought two more Macs as a consequence of my great experience. I've had to call Apple Care about a dozen times during the last 18 months and I got either a Canadian or an American on the line each time who understood my frustrations, gave me good solutions, and got my problems fixed in a short time. Apparently Apple has joined the quality revolution. I have nothing but praise for Apple's help desk folks. Remember Apple's software and help desk advantage when someone tells you that a comparably equipped PC is cheaper than a Mac.
Great product!! (2009-06-14)
I was looking for an IMac to start writing iPhone applications and while searching through product lists, I found this one. It is cheaper than the latest version and the differences are minor. The processor is a bit faster than the latest model plus it has a larger screen. The only differences I noticed were the harddrive size and video card. Don't hesitate if you want an iMac, especially or $1,199.
Like a Brain Transplant! (2009-06-12)
I had bought my last Mac in 2001. I was wanting, needing a new computer but didn't feel as if I could afford one right now. Amazon made it painless. I did have trouble getting it set up. It turned out to be the mouse that was defective. Good thing I had an old mouse that worked until Apple could send me a new one. The tech at Apple told me this was a used computer (as another reviewer also commented) but that is not true. It was just last year's model. Apparently companies buy the old models and sell them. After much questioning I found that this computer was built in November 2008. I bought it in May. I don't mind that. It was a bargain. I bought the extra three year warranty from Apple. This computer is a pure joy to use after my 8 year old "antique."
Awesome machine (2009-06-04)
I LOVE this iMac. My husband has a Macpro which is also very nice, but this iMac is just for me (and the kids). We all love it. We haven't had any problems with it. We will never buy a pc again.
